A Fresh Start: Moving from Arizona to Washington

When Jahzara and her family moved from Arizona to Washington in early 2024, they were looking for a fresh start, especially when it came to school. After years of attending other in-person, as well as online schools, Jahzara was struggling to stay focused. She was often cramming assignments at the last minute and falling behind in subjects like math. That all changed when she switched to Washington Virtual Academies.

Finding Focus with Washington Virtual Academies

The balance and structure offered through online learning at Washington Virtual Academies gave her the opportunity to explore what kind of routine worked best for her. For the first time, she was able to create a daily schedule that supported her need to focus and allowed her to balance academics with personal growth. She began completing her work on time, retaining more of what she was learning, and feeling truly engaged in her education.

“She’s so much happier now,” says her mom, Pamela. “No safety concerns, no distractions, just learning and growing. She’s even starting to enjoy science, which is a big deal in our family!”

Discovering Creativity Through the ReelMe Contest

With more control over her time, Jahzara also began reconnecting with her creative side. When she saw an announcement for the national K12-powered ReelMe video contest, she jumped at the opportunity to try something new. Although she had never entered a video editing competition before, she took the lead in every part of the process, writing the script, setting the deadlines, and editing the video after finishing her schoolwork each day.

“I entered the ReelMe contest to take the opportunity to compete with my video editing,” she says said. “Even though the video wasn’t perfect, I was proud of myself. I wasn’t expecting to win anything, so I was so incredibly shocked when I saw my face in the winner reveal video. Even just getting second was more than enough, because my work went noticed!”

Winning National Recognition and Building Confidence

That moment of recognition was a turning point for Jahzara, not just as a student, but as a creator. Today, Jahzara is thriving with a 4.0 GPA and a deepening interest in science, a favorite subject for the whole family. Her online learning journey has given her more than just academic success; it’s helped her rediscover joy in her daily routine, make time for family, and believe in her potential.

Why Washington Virtual Academies Works for Families

From struggling with fractions to placing in a national competition, Jahzara’s story is a powerful example of how the right environment can unlock a student’s full potential, and why Washington Virtual Academies continues to be a life-changing choice for so many families.
