Online Middle School Academics
At Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA), we believe in finding new ways of learning that work for all kinds of students. That’s why we use the K12 curriculum. It was created by an experienced team of educators using proven instructional approaches.

Welcome From Our Middle School Principal
Mark Lagerquist, Middle School Principal
Dear Middle School Students,
Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year, and we’re excited to welcome both our returning students and those joining WAVA Middle School for the first time.
A new school year means a fresh start, new opportunities, and a chance to build some great habits from day one. During onboarding, you may have heard about our Five Keys to Success at WAVA Middle School:
- Show Up: Attend your required live sessions and be ready to participate
- Put in the Time: Dedicate at least 30 hours each week to school (and yes, your live sessions count!)
- Stay Connected: Keep in touch with your teachers, especially your homeroom teachers, and ask for help before you feel overwhelmed
- Show What YOU Know: Take your assessments seriously so we know how to best support your learning
- Build a Routine: Find a schedule that works for you and stick with it.
In case you missed it during onboarding, or just want a quick refresher, I put together a short video breaking down all five keys and how they can help you start the year strong.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on Day #1. Show up, stay connected, put in the effort, and give yourself the opportunity to grow throughout the year.
We’re glad you’re here, and we’re looking forward to everything we’ll accomplish together. Let’s have a great 2026–2027 school year!
Cheering you on,
Mark Lagerquist,
Middle School Principal

Preparing Middle School Students for College and Career
Our career and college prep program helps middle school students begin considering more long-term goals by discovering their interests in various career fields. Students take career exploration courses to get a broad overview of job fields, progressing from general information to more in-depth study into specific career opportunities. This insight will help them better choose a career pathway in high school, giving them a competitive edge for college and careers. Students in the program can also connect with industry professionals through live online sessions and participate in field trips and career clubs.
Choice of Standard or FLEX Program
Families can choose the standard WAVA program or the new FLEX Program. Both use the same quality curriculum from K12. The standard program features required online synchronous sessions called Class Connects and is best for students who need live instructional time with teachers. The FLEX Program has only one required Class Connect each week and is well-suited for independent learners with engaged Learning Coaches.
Highly Capable Program
WAVA’s Highly Capable Program provides enrichment services for the most highly capable students. Highly capable students are those who perform, or show potential to perform, at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments. Highly capable students generally have outstanding abilities in intellectual aptitude, specific academic abilities, and creative productivity within a specific domain.
