How WAVA Student Mauricio Inspires Through Service and Leadership
Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA) has proven to be an ideal environment for Renton, Washington, native Mauricio. Before joining WAVA, Mauricio struggled in a traditional brick-and-mortar setting. But once enrolled, he discovered a learning environment that supported his need for focus, nurtured his strengths, and allowed him to grow both academically and personally.
With structured class connections, individualized pacing, and opportunities to lead, Mauricio has flourished into an Honor Roll student for the past two years. His growth is especially evident in South Sound Outings, a club led by WAVA teacher Felicia Kern, where in-person activities help students build confidence, friendships, and leadership skills.
Mauricio has stepped into a trusted student leadership role where he creates activities and games. He loves watching students arrive as strangers and leave as teammates, often creating their own team names as they bond and work together.
Mauricio is the youngest of four siblings, a role that has shaped him into someone who is deeply empathetic and mature. His oldest brother is medically fragile and has special needs, and growing up alongside him has instilled in Mauricio a sense of patience, responsibility, and compassion far beyond his years. His motto is simple and powerful: “Believe in yourself, and you’re halfway there.”

Courage in Action: Four Experiences That Define Mauricio
1. Saving His Brother’s Life

In 2022, Mauricio faced a moment no child expects but one that revealed his strength of character. When his older brother began choking, Mauricio’s mother attempted to help but couldn’t dislodge the obstruction. Drawing on the emergency skills he had practiced during Cub Scouts’ Arrow of Light (AOL) program, including a CPR unit he learned during the pandemic at home, Mauricio stepped in and performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully saving his brother’s life.
Only one week later, during Boy Scouts, he earned his First Aid Merit Badge proof of how seriously he took the responsibility to learn lifesaving skills. What he practiced on pillows during online CPR sessions turned into real-world action when it mattered most.
2. Earning a Spot in a Competitive Aviation Program

Mauricio was accepted into a highly selective youth aviation program. The application process alone is known for being extremely challenging: written submissions, a total of seven interviews, tool-handling evaluations, and group roundtable sessions simulating aviation teamwork. The moment students learned they were accepted was unforgettable. While standing on opposite ends of the hangar for the final announcement, the program owner delivered the news with suspense: “I have some good news and some bad news…” The “bad news” was that the group would face a steep learning curve. The good news? Every student there had earned their place in the program.
Mauricio later even helped his friend, Amina, join; evidence of his leadership and the generosity he brings to every space he is part of.
3. Getting his Lifeguard Certification
Becoming a lifeguard has been one of Mauricio’s biggest personal goals since he turned 13. His love for water safety grew after he coordinated a Boy Scouts event at a local pool. At 15, he contacted the pool manager himself. He was determined, prepared, and still a bit nervous, but he filled out the application and collected recommendation letters to build his resume. His interviewers were impressed.

The certification process was demanding and included swimming tests, water rescues, scenario training, and a grueling three-minute solo CPR test. After passing the multiple-choice exam and skills demonstration, he was officially hired in June 2025. Mauricio continues to grow in this field; he is now completing his Water Safety Instructor (WSI) training so he can begin teaching others about water safety, a full-circle moment for him.
4. Pursuing Eagle Scout Rank

Mauricio recently passed official review and accomplished one of the most challenging achievements in Scouting: earning the rank of Eagle Scout. With his Board of Review completed, he is reflecting on years of leadership, service projects, and volunteerism that have shaped who he is today.
Becoming an Eagle Scout means more to Mauricio than simply gaining a new rank. It symbolizes perseverance, community service, and exceptional character; all qualities Mauricio demonstrates daily.

A Heart for Service and Leadership
Service has been woven into Mauricio’s identity for as long as his family can remember. He is the kind of young man who instinctively steps in, helps where he’s needed, and lifts others through his actions, not for recognition, but because he genuinely cares.
One story illustrates this beautifully. At the Special Olympics, Mauricio was assigned the role of “Runner,” carrying event results from station to station. A long-time volunteer later shared he had never seen anyone run the entire time until Mauricio. Even when his mother reminded him he didn’t have to sprint, he replied, “The athletes are waiting for their results so they can get their awards. I don’t want to hold them up.” He spent eight hours running results with a smile. Although he wasn’t scheduled to return the next day, he showed up anyway and volunteered another eight hours selling merchandise. That selflessness and quiet determination reflect exactly who he is.

Mauricio channels his heart for service through several structured leadership programs. In the Boy Scouts of America, he serves as a Senior Patrol Leader and Instructor, guiding and mentoring younger scouts with patience and confidence. As a 2nd Lieutenant in the Fire Cadets program, he trains in emergency response and public safety roles that demand responsibility and discipline. He also participates in Teens for Teens, helping support youth and families across his community.
His drive to make a difference extends beyond local service, too. Mauricio recently participated in a Sports Illustrated fundraising competition, helping raise awareness and support for the Why Not You Foundation and The V Foundation. He placed in the Top 10 nationally, using his platform to contribute to causes he believes in. His leadership even brought him to the Washington State Capitol, where he participated in a bill signing, an opportunity that strengthened his growing interest in civic engagement and advocacy.

Beyond service, Mauricio stays actively involved in activities that reflect his curiosity and commitment to personal growth. He has played baseball, basketball, and fencing, and currently holds Varsity letters in both golf and swim, earning Rookie of the Year for swim last season. He was also accepted into a competitive aviation program, where students build airplanes from the ground up and later have the chance to fly them.
Together, these experiences show a young man who approaches every challenge with purpose, curiosity, and heart someone who leads not only with skill, but with character.
