Alumni Spotlight: How Esports Shaped Foster’s Path at Washington Virtual Academies
Foster is no stranger to the online learning world, in fact, he has been part of Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA) since first grade and is now not only a graduate, but an esports coach for the K12-powered school. Over the years, his connection with the school grew deeper, not only academically, but socially and professionally.
From Student to Coach: Foster’s Journey with Washington Virtual Academies
Foster’s high school years were defined by his involvement with Washington Virtual Academies’ Esports program that shaped so much of his high school experience. He was a founding member of the team when it first launched in 2021 and helped build it from the ground up. What started with about 40 participants quickly grew into something much bigger, with over 100 players involved by his senior year.
Building an Esports Legacy: Launching WAVA’s Competitive Gaming Team
Foster quickly rose to the role of Head Captain and earned multiple MVP and Leadership awards. Under his leadership, Washington Virtual Academies’ Esports team earned more than 15 first place finishes in league competitions. His favorite game at the start was Fortnite, but over time, he found his stride with Valorant, a game he still enjoys playing today.
Virtual Team, Real Connections: How Esports Built Community Online
For Foster, esports became a pathway to friendships, professional opportunities, and college interest. Even though the team was fully virtual, and members were spread across the state, the sense of community and commitment was real. While they never managed to meet up in person, Foster hopes to make that happen for future players. That spirit of connection, despite physical distance, is part of what drives him as he transitions into the role of Head Coach. He wants to give new students that same sense of belonging, purpose, and potential.

Coaching the Next Generation: Foster’s Vision for WAVA Esports
Following his June 2025 graduation, Foster worked with WAVA’s leadership and stepped right into coaching duties. With so many students expressing interest and registrations rolling in, he expects to build another dynamic and competitive team and anticipates strong season. When he’s not gaming or coaching, he loves following hockey. He’s a big fan of the Seattle Thunderbirds, a junior team, as well as the Seattle Kraken in the NHL.
Esports as a Pathway to College and Career Opportunities
Reflecting on his journey, Foster is proud of how esports has opened doors in his life, from developing leadership skills to earning college offers and job opportunities. Being able to now coach a new generation of Washington Virtual Academies Esports players is a role he doesn’t take lightly. His journey from student to leader is a testament to how virtual education and extracurricular activities like esports can truly empower students, build community, and create lasting impact.
