5 Daily Habits That Can Transform Your School Year
The back-to-school season brings a mix of anticipation, excitement, and, often, stress for students and families. While many families begin the year with structure and optimism, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed once the busy days set in following a long break.
With a few intentional habits, you can set your family up for a smoother, more successful school year. Whether you’re a returning Washington Virtual Academies family or joining us for the first time, these five simple practices can help you stay organized, reduce stress, and create meaningful momentum from day one.
“It’s all about progress, not perfection,” said Hailey Chamberlain, Community Engagement Specialist. “These small, consistent steps really help families stay grounded, especially in an online school environment. We always encourage families to build routines that support both academic success and personal well-being.”
- Use School Apps Daily
Many schools use communication platforms like Class Dojo or Remind to keep families informed. From tech tips to spirit week reminders, these apps help ensure you’re not missing important updates.
“We always encourage families to check their messages at least once a day,” Hailey added. “It keeps everyone on the same page and helps build strong communication between learning coaches, students, and teachers.”
If you haven’t already, set up your app account now and start forming the habit of checking it every morning or evening.
- Set Alarms to Stay on Track
Calendar reminders are great—but can be easily missed. Instead, try using phone alarms to create a structure throughout your day. Use them for time blocking your tasks like logging in, checking messages, reviewing homework, or even taking screen breaks.
These small alerts can help you build a predictable rhythm, which is especially helpful in a virtual learning environment.
3. Prioritize Healthy Habits
Did you know that good sleep, nutrition, and movement can directly affect academic performance? At Washington Virtual Academies, we encourage families to treat wellness as a key part of the school routine.
From healthy breakfasts to screen-free outdoor breaks, small lifestyle choices help students stay focused and energized. Don’t underestimate the power of family dinners! They’re linked to stronger academic outcomes and give students a chance to reflect on their day.
4. Build a Support System
Whether you are part of a neighborhood co-op or joining a vibrant virtual community, connection matters.
“We love seeing Washington Virtual Academies families connect through our regional outings and online groups,” added Hailey. “It’s a great way to share tips, ask questions, and just feel supported throughout the school year.”
You can also explore tutoring support, whether through K12-powered programs or local resources. This helps your child strengthen skills and allows them to stay on track academically.
5. Practice Positivity
A positive mindset can do more than lift your mood; it can improve your child’s learning outcomes. Studies show that positive thinking boosts the brain’s memory center and helps students perform better, particularly in challenging subjects.
Try starting a daily habit of listing good things that happened or repeating simple affirmations together.
“A little encouragement goes a long way,” said Hailey. “Students who feel supported and confident are more engaged and ready to learn.”
Make This Year Your Best One Yet
These small habits can create a strong foundation for a successful and balanced school year. Whether you implement one or all five, the key is to stay consistent and give yourself grace along the way.
