Every student deserves a place where they feel welcomed, supported, encouraged, and excited to learn. At Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA), education is about more than completing assignment and earning grades. WAVA isn’t necessarily the perfect fit for every student, but for many families, virtual education can provide an encouraging alternative that supports academic growth and personal development.

WAVA Is More Than an Online Classroom: It’s a community!

A common question about online school is, “How do students connect with others if they learn from home?”

At WAVA, students have opportunities to connect through their classes, school activities, clubs, and engagement experiences. These connections can help students discover shared interests, build on friendships, and feel like they are part of something bigger.

WAVA’s official website also highlights daily live classes, multiple learning pathways, special programs, and Washington-certified teachers. These features help create a structured educational experience with opportunities for individualized support.

October is a special month dedicated to raising awareness about bullying, encouraging kindness, celebrating differences and helping students feel safe and included. National Bullying Prevention Month reminds us that every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, whether they’re attending school in person, participating in an online classroom, or interacting with others in their community.

Bullying prevention is about more than recognizing harmful behavior. It is about creating a comfortable and safe environment for students, WAVA does that. WAVA supports students with counselors for every grade, a dedicated Student Support team, accessible and skilled teachers and support staff. WAVA provides online environments for connections like our K12 Zone. A dedicated space for students to connect and grow friendships. Students also participate in online clubs, competitions, attend in-person outings and virtual field trips.

As we continue into the month of October, what are some National Bullying Awareness Month Facts?

Fact #1: Bullying Prevention Month began in 2006.

PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center started the campaign as a week of awareness. It later grew into an entire month of education and activities.

Fact #2: Orange is the color of Unity Day!

Orange represents a shared commitment to kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Unity Day in 2026was Wednesday, October 21.

Fact #3: About one in five students report being bullied.

These statistics show why awareness, supportive adults, and positive peer relationships matter.

Fact #4: Bullying can happen online, too.

Cyberbullying can happen through messages, social media, online games, and other digital spaces. WAVA creates an online culture for our students that is kind, respectful and welcoming. We have support staff and online moderators accessible and available throughout classes and online environments. Respectful online communication matters for students in every kind of school.

Fact #5: Small actions can help make a difference.

Including someone in a conversation, showing empathy, reporting bullying, or reaching out to a trusted adult can contribute to a kinder school community.

How WAVA Students Can Help Build a Positive Online Community

WAVA focuses on student involvement. Students can use online tools to share and connect with one another. We offer assemblies, homerooms, office hours and more that have themes built around social and emotional wellness, respect and kindness. We promote and celebrate our students individually and. WAVA also offers a parent community for our Learning Coaches to stay connected and continue to be aware and involved in their student’s education.

A positive school culture is something we create together one interaction at a time.

Let’s Make Kindness Fun!

Here are a few ideas students and families can try throughout the school year.

Kindness Challenge

  • Give three genuine compliments or encouraging messages this week.
  • Wear Orange
  • Show support for kindness and inclusion on Unity Day or another awareness activity.
  • Get Creative and do an activity in your neighborhood or area promoting kindness
  • Design a digital poster, drawing, or positive message about friendship.
  • Reach Out to someone to brighten their day
  • Invite someone into a conversation or help a new classmate feel welcome.
  • Send an email to your teacher to thank them for their support and dedication

These are simple ways to practice kindness and build awareness! We always want to hear from our students! Students and families can share their REAL stories with us at the K12 Voice, submit your story and be heard today! K12 Voices – K12

Visit the official WAVA Student and Family Testimonials page to read firsthand experiences.

You can also explore the WAVA homepage for featured student stories, family perspectives, and articles about student accomplishments.

Bullying prevention doesn’t end when October is over. Kindness, acceptance, respect, and inclusion are values we can practice all year long. Let’s continue to build a WAVA community where students feel encouraged to learn, confident to help, excited to participate and comfortable being themselves!

Because every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and belong. Together we can make a difference, one kind word and one supportive action at a time!
