Social Emotional Learning at WAVA

At WAVA, we believe school is more than academics. It’s about helping students thrive as whole individuals.

What is SEL?

“Social emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. It is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”

How WAVA Teaches Social Emotional Skills

We use 7 Mindsets, a research-based social emotional learning (SEL) program that supports students and staff in building skills for success in school and life.

Through this program, students develop:

  • A sense of happiness and purpose
  • Positive decision-making skills
  • Self-awareness and self-management
  • Strong relationships, empathy, and respect for others

Each month, our school community focuses on a new mindset and simple, practical ways to apply it both at school and at home.

What are the 7 Mindsets?

The 7 Mindsets are based on a three-year study designed to explore how people find happiness, success, meaning, and purpose. The research showed that success isn’t about where we come from or what we know—it’s about how we think.

By teaching and modeling these principles, WAVA staff help students build self-awareness, manage emotions, strengthen relationships, and make thoughtful, responsible choices.
