Washington 7th Grader Wins National Writing Competition and Earns $300 in Prizes

Stories & Spotlights
WAVA Maizah

Maizah, a 7th grade student at Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA), earned two top honors in the inaugural K12 National Writing Competition, which brought in more than 2,000 submissions from K12 enrolled students across the country. Her recognition highlights not only her talent as a young writer but also the impact of student voice in addressing both personal growth and real-world challenges.

A Story of Courage Takes First Place

Maizah earned first place in the 7th grade nonfiction category, winning $250 for her piece “A Spectacular Sight.” The essay shares a vivid and personal account of facing her fear of heights during a chairlift ride near Mount Hood.

Through descriptive imagery and honest reflection, Maizah brings readers into the moment, capturing both the anxiety and the eventual sense of accomplishment that comes with pushing past fear. Her story resonates as a reminder that growth often comes from stepping outside of one’s comfort zone.

A Powerful Perspective on Teen Mental Health

In addition to her first-place win, Maizah also received the People’s Choice Award, earning 180 public votes and an additional $50 prize for her essay “Behind the Screens.”

This piece takes a closer look at the impact of social media on teens, addressing topics such as anxiety, depression, and the pressure of constant comparison. Her ability to thoughtfully explore these challenges demonstrates a level of insight that goes beyond her years and connects with a wide audience.

Both of her award-winning entries are now published as part of the national competition.

Finding Her Voice Through Writing

Maizah submitted four pieces in total, including poetry and fiction, using the competition as an opportunity to explore different styles and strengthen her skills. She shared that the experience has helped shape her future goals.

“I think that K12 has helped me in such a way that it will benefit me in my future,” she said.

As a full-time student at WAVA, Maizah balances her academic responsibilities with advanced English coursework, participation in a creative writing club, and additional faith-based education. She credits her online school environment with giving her the space and confidence to express herself and grow as a writer.

A Bright Future Ahead

Outside of school, Maizah enjoys spending time with her large family, including her five siblings who also attend WAVA. She shares a love of cars with her dad and brothers and enjoys traveling, with a recent family trip to Arizona among her favorites.

Her $300 prize winnings is already being put toward a future goal. Maizah plans to save the money to help pay for her first car. With national recognition already under her belt and a clear passion for storytelling, Maizah is well on her way toward achieving her dream of becoming an author.
