Washington Virtual Academies Student Spotlight: Rubiee’s Path to Self-Publishing a Novel

When she’s not in class, Rubiee, an author, big sister, and passionate nature enthusiast, uses her imagination in the world of literature. More specifically, through novel writing! With one novel down, The Ways of Wolves, Rubiee is already planning the tales of her next creative adventure.
It was during the pandemic that Rubiee found a creative outlet through writing and telling stories with her friends via regularly scheduled Zoom calls. She became inspired by these sessions and ultimately self-published her first book.
A full-time student at Washington Virtual Academies, Rubiee shares that her switch to online learning enabled her to thrive creatively from the comfort of her home.

“I feel like I’m able to manage my schedule, and I have a lot of flexibility for writing,” said Rubiee during her interview with Teen Kids News.
Living on a remote island that only has three ferries traveling to and from the island per day means that having access to Washington Virtual Academies’ resources has truly empowered Rubiee to take meaningful steps toward her writing journey and ultimately led her to the story of Blue Jay, the main character in her book.
“I like it because I get a lot of inspiration for my stories from the isolated area and wilderness,” adds Rubiee. “
In her book readers are invited to explore themes of kindness, forgiveness, and loyalty, even when faced with betrayal and hardship. Blue Jay’s journey shows that true strength often lies in understanding and compassion, even toward those who have wronged us. Her book follows Blue Jay, an orphaned, young wolf found alone in a swamp with no memory of his original family.
Blue Jay struggles to feel at home with his new pack as he grows up. Despite this, he builds friendships and a sense of belonging. Nonetheless, peace doesn’t last long, as some wolves in the pack hide anger and seek revenge. Blue Jay becomes fiercely loyal to his new family, determined to protect them from harm. But will he be able to defend his loved ones from the growing danger, or will the threats around him be too much?
Young, creative, and courageous – Rubiee is an inspiration for teens who aspire to become writers. To learn more about what students like Rubiee are saying about their experience with Washington Virtual Academies or to learn more about our online school, check out our how it works page.
