Kicks, Keys, and a Love for Learning with Rohan

Stories & Spotlights

At just eight years old, Rohan is already a force to be reckoned with. A second grader at Washington Virtual Academies, Rohan is using the adaptability of online learning to embrace a rich, well-rounded education while pursuing an impressive list of passions, from martial arts and music to science and leadership.

Rohan has been with Washington Virtual Academies since kindergarten and the school’s adaptable schedule and Highly Capable Program has allowed him to chase his goals without compromise. One of those goals? Earning his black belt in Taekwondo. Rohan trains at a local Taekwondo studio, where his dedication recently earned him an accelerated promotion, from second degree blue belt to second degree red belt. That jump sets him on a fast track to skip four full belt levels and puts him well on his way toward testing for his black belt which he recently attained. Shortly after, Rohan received three gold medals at the Twin Tigers Taekwondo Tournament!

“At just 8 years old, Rohan’s commitment to Taekwondo shines through every kick and form-disciplined, focused, and full of heart.  Even more impressive is his leadership; he leads not with words, but with example, showing others that greatness begins with consistency and courage.” Shared his Taekwondo instructor, Master Rogers.

Martial arts is just one arena where Rohan shines. He’s also an accomplished musician who plays both drums and piano like his big sister Ilyannie who he says is his role model. He frequently performs with his sister, and the duo is preparing to present a piano duet featuring Beethoven. Rohan also has a love for drumming and his favorite drum pieces are the Pacific Rim movie theme and Money for Nothing, tracks that show off his rhythm and energy

Academically, Rohan’s love of learning is just as strong as his passion for the arts. He’s especially drawn to science, nature, math, and art, and he’s looking forward to exploring foreign languages, particularly Spanish, when he begins third grade. Hands-on activities like building with Legos also top his list of favorite hobbies, helping him flex both his creative and analytical muscles.

Through Washington Virtual Academies, Rohan has also had opportunities to engage with his peers in real-world experiences. At a recent Capitol Hill field trip organized by the Associated Student Body, he and his team competed in a mock legislative session against high school students and won first place! Rohan served as the congressman for his group, gaining his first taste of public speaking at a young age.

When he’s not training, performing, or studying, Rohan gives back. For example, he recently participated in a Kickathon to raise funds for college-bound students at his dojang, proof that his pursuit of excellence includes a desire to uplift others.

Looking ahead, Rohan’s goals are as ambitious as they are inspiring. He dreams of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon so he can help people live better, healthier lives. With the support of his family, school, and devoted instructors like Master Rogers at his dojang, there’s no doubt Rohan will continue to soar. Whether it’s the sound of a well-timed kihap or the notes of a classical piano duet, one thing is clear, Rohan is just getting started.
