Student Spotlight: Dakota – From Pain to Purpose Through Virtual Learning

Stories & Spotlights

At Washington Virtual Academies we’re proud to spotlight Dakota who graduated and walked across the stage on June 8, 2025 at our ceremony at Washington State Fair & Events Center in Puyallup. This 18-year-old’s personal journey reveals the power of healing through art, empathy, and education.

Finding Safety in a New Learning Space

For much of her childhood, Dakota’s traditional school experience was overshadowed by bullying and emotional trauma. From elementary through middle school, the classroom was more a place of fear than learning.

“I was constantly in fear, carrying pain that no kid should have to carry,” Dakota shared. “I’d sit in class with my head down, too scared to raise my hand, even when I knew the answer.”

The emotional toll began to weigh heavily on her mental health. Panic attacks became part of her daily life, and Dakota knew something needed to change. That change came in 2018, when she made the brave decision to enroll in Washington Virtual Academies’ online program.

The transition was life-changing. Dakota said: “Since starting online school, my life has changed. My anxiety is more manageable, and I feel safe. I’m finally able to focus on learning without fear. Online school gave me something I hadn’t felt in years—peace.”

A Creative Soul with a Compassionate Mission

Dakota has always found comfort in creativity. She plays the violin, sings, paints, and draws—using the arts as a powerful outlet for expression and healing.

“Singing is a big part of who I am. I love singing with my sister for people, it brings me joy and helps me connect with others,” she said. “Sharing music and art makes me feel like I’m giving a piece of myself to the world.”

Her creativity, combined with deep empathy and a passion for helping others, has shaped her future path. Dakota plans to pursue a degree in social work and become an art therapist, working with children who face anxiety and trauma. She exclaimed: “I want to help them feel seen, heard, and safe. I want to give back in a way that turns my pain into something healing.”

Empowering Others Through Service

At just 15, Dakota began volunteering with Girls on the Run, a national program that empowers young girls through running and mentorship. For two years, she helped guide and inspire others just as she had once needed.

“I saw firsthand how important it is for young people to feel supported, encouraged, and believed in,” Dakota said. Her journey is not just one of resilience, it’s a story of growth, purpose, and the incredible impact one person can make when given the right environment to thrive.

Dakota’s mom, has seen the transformation firsthand. “After Dakota joined Washington Virtual Academies in 2018, her grades immediately improved. Washington Virtual Academies was supportive of all her needs, going above and beyond at crucial times in Dakota’s learning,” she shared.

Graduation Ceremony Held June 8 at Washington State Fair & Events Center

On June 8, Dakota proudly walked across the stage at the Washington State Fair & Events Center, joining more than 220 of her fellow virtual learners to celebrate the Class of 2025. This in-person ceremony marked a significant milestone for students who completed their high school education in our online environment with many meeting their teachers and peers face-to-face. For Dakota and her classmates, the event was a powerful reminder of their resilience, adaptability, and achievement.

Dakota’s Message to Others

To those who may be struggling, Dakota offers this encouragement: “If you’re reading this and feel lost or overwhelmed, please know that you’re not alone. Things can get better. They did for me, and I believe they can for you too.”
