The Flex Program

At WAVA, we know every student learns differently—and families have busy, unique schedules. That’s why we offer Flex, an alternative online learning program designed for students who thrive with independence, motivation, and the support of engaged Learning Coaches. Unlike the standard WAVA program, which has daily live classes, Flex is for students who need flexible scheduling due to learning styles, medical requirements, work, or caregiving responsibilities.

Why Families Choose Flex

There are lots of reasons to choose Flex to fit your family’s needs. Here are some of the main benefits students enjoy:

Learn on Your Schedule

Flex lets your child complete schoolwork when it works best for your family’s routine. Morning person or night owl? Flex works around you, not the other way around.

Stay on Track With Support

Scheduled check-ins will give your child the guidance and resources they need to succeed. Teachers are readily available for guidance, encouragement, and resources. Students with IEPs receive all required special education services, including specially designed instruction (SDI).

High-Quality Education, Greater Flexibility

Flex students use the same rigorous curriculum as traditional WAVA students. They attend homeroom weekly, participate in assessments, and have access to programs like Highly Capable and 7Mindsets SEL. Flex ensures that learning and growth continue while giving families the freedom to manage their own routines.

A Solution for Busy Families

Whether it’s balancing extracurriculars, medical appointments, travel, or caregiving, Flex seamlessly fits learning into your child’s life.

How Our Flex Program Works

Flex is asynchronous, letting students set up their own routines with Learning Coach support. In contrast to the standard WAVA program, Flex has no daily live instruction or recordings. Instead, students attend a weekly homeroom and participate in student-led conferences every 4–5 weeks. Flex students also:

  • Complete all coursework, including practice and workbook tasks
  • Participate in WAVA and state assessments (MAP, SBA, RAN/RAS, DIBELS, etc.)
  • Track academic and personal growth goals
  • Access teacher support via email, phone, or scheduled office hours

Learning Coaches help students stay organized, encourage productive struggle, and ensure students spend adequate time on schoolwork.

Flex is ideal for students who are:

  • Motivated and independent learners
  • Able to participate in routine online coursework
  • Ready to set daily schedules and practice consistent time management
  • Supported by a Learning Coach at home

To succeed, Flex students must:

  • Participate regularly in the K12 School (OLS)
  • Complete all aspects of coursework, including practice and workbook tasks
  • Attend 1 weekly homeroom session live
  • Attend all specially designed instruction (SDI) sessions if they have an IEP
  • Participate in student-led conferences every 4–5 weeks
  • Demonstrate learning growth via assessments, grades, and progress monitoring
  • Maintain academic honesty

Learning Coaches play a key role in student success by:

  • Establishing routines and monitoring learning time
  • Supporting academic growth and encouraging problem-solving
  • Teaching students to ask for help effectively from teachers
  • Celebrating progress while allowing students to learn from “productive struggle”

  • Flex students earn the same WAVA diploma as other students; transcripts do not indicate participation in Flex
  • Graduation requirements are identical for all students, as set by the Omak School District and aligned with Washington State standards
  • Flex students may participate in Running Start in 11th or 12th grade

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Flex different from the standard program?

Flex students organize their own schedules with their Learning Coaches. Unlike standard WAVA, Flex does not offer daily direct instruction in live online classes—students only attend limited live sessions, including homeroom. Flex students also participate in mandatory monthly conferences and set academic and personal growth goals.

Is the curriculum the same as standard WAVA?

Yes! Flex students use the same online platform, curriculum, and grade-level courses as standard WAVA students. They also have access to social emotional learning and may participate in all clubs and social opportunities offered at WAVA and K12.

Can students mix Flex and standard WAVA?

No, students must choose one program. Families should consider how important live online class sessions and recordings are to their child’s learning.

Do siblings need to enroll in the same program?

No. Families often have one child in Flex and another in the standard program, depending on individual learning needs.

What if Flex isn’t the right fit?

Students can switch back to standard WAVA following WAVA’s calendar for new student start dates. Decisions can be parent- or Flex-initiated and apply for the remainder of the school year.
