What Winning the Stock Market Challenge Has Taught Washington Virtual Academies Student, Kayvion about Leadership and Teamwork
In a high-stakes, real-world investing simulation, Kayvion, a sophomore at Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA), and his team outperformed 20 competitors throughout the state to win first place in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge, turning strategy and collaboration into a moment of lasting personal growth.
The Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge is a hands-on, fast-paced competition that gives students a real-world look at how the stock market works. Teams are given a hypothetical investment portfolio and challenged to grow their funds by buying and selling stocks in a simulated trading environment.
Throughout the experience, students must analyze market trends, make strategic decisions under pressure, and work collaboratively to maximize their returns. Designed to build financial literacy and critical thinking skills, the challenge mirrors real investing scenarios while helping students gain confidence in money management and teamwork.
Turning Strategy into Success
Held at the Amazon Day One Building, the competition challenged teams of four students to grow a starting portfolio by making strategic investment decisions in real time. Kayvion and his teammates, Kenshion, Mauricio, and Esme, worked together to diversify their stocks and maximize profit.
Their approach paid off. By combining research, communication, and quick decision-making, the team outperformed the competition and secured first place, each earning a $125 Amazon gift card. But for Kayvion, the experience was about more than winning.
“It showed me there’s no ‘I’ in team,” he shared. “We couldn’t have done it without each other.” While Kayvion and one teammate had met before, this was the first time the full group came together in person, making the win even more meaningful as a true team accomplishment.

From Participant to Vice President
Kayvion’s path to this moment began a few years ago when he first got involved in student business organizations. Starting in Future Business Leaders of America, the club later transitioned into Business Professionals of America (BPA), where he found his stride.
That drive quickly set him apart. Known for speaking up in meetings and staying engaged, Kayvion stepped into a leadership role and now serves as Vice President of his BPA chapter. In this role, he helps organize meetings, creates presentations, and supports the growth of the club.
His goal is to bring more students into the experience. He has even inspired his younger siblings to get involved, with one already participating and another eager to join.
Finding Confidence Through Connection
Kayvion’s confidence today stands in stark contrast to where he started. He has been a student at WAVA since fourth grade. Early on, he found it difficult to turn on his camera or actively participate in class. Over time, that changed. Now, he is comfortable speaking up, leading meetings, and representing his peers. His growth reflects not just academic development, but personal transformation.
A Flexible Schedule with Real-World Impact
One of the biggest advantages Kayvion sees in online learning is the ability to structure his day in a way that works for him. His busiest days fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting early with classes like financial literacy and biology, followed by time for household responsibilities and extracurriculars. He is also part of his school’s esports team and enjoys gaming in his free time.
Looking ahead, Kayvion plans to participate in Running Start beginning his junior year, giving him a head start on college coursework while still in high school. His long-term goal is to pursue a career in finance or business.
What Comes Next
With their recent win, Kayvion and his team have earned the opportunity to take their skills to the next level. They will compete at a national event in Boston this June, representing not only their school but the power of collaboration and preparation.
For Kayvion, the experience is another step forward in a journey that continues to evolve.
From a student who once hesitated to speak up to a confident leader helping guide others, his story is a reminder that growth often starts with simply getting involved.
