How It Works
Washington Virtual Academies uses online curriculum and services provided by K12. The programs allow learning to happen at home, on the road, or wherever an Internet connection can be found. While attendance, teacher interaction, and daily lessons are conducted online, our lessons use physical materials and offline tools as well. For high school, WAVA uses the K12 high school program from K12. Whether targeting a top-tier four-year university, a local community college, or an immediate career, WAVA prepares students to maximize their post-high school success through K12 high school.
Choice of Standard or FLEX Program
Families can choose the standard WAVA program or the new FLEX Program. The standard program is best for students who value time with their peers and require live instructional time with teachers. The FLEX Program is well-suited for independent learners with engaged Learning Coaches.
Certified Teachers, Superior Teaching Tools
At the Washington Virtual Academies, all students interact with one or more state-certified teachers (depending on the grade level) and communicate regularly with their teachers through e-mail, telephone, and online meetings. Each WAVA family receives boxes of materials, including a wide array of textbooks, videos, and other hands-on tools and resources. These materials complement the interactive online elements of our program, ensuring that students receive instruction using the best method for each subject.
Extensive School Support System
WAVA also provides an extensive support system to both parents and students. In grades K-8, working closely with the teacher, the parent (or other responsible adult) serves as a 'learning coach' to the child, helping to facilitate his or her progress and working to modify the pace and schedule as needed. At the high school level, the adult is less involved as students work at more of a collective pace with a class of students in conjunction with the teacher. Each teacher is state certified and trained in his or her specific subject area. In addition, monthly networking opportunities are provided through various events and outings, enabling the entire school community to keep in close contact.
Individualized Learning, Public School Accountability
In addition to providing individualized learning, as an online public school, WAVA provides the structure, administrative support, oversight, accountability, and state testing required of all public schools.
Family Academic Support Team (FAST)
FAST empowers students to overcome challenges—be they academic, social, emotional, medical, or otherwise—to succeed in school and beyond. This holistic approach includes early intervention, support services, and linking families to school and community-based resources. FAST members and teachers work with families to provide the extra help needed to enable students to stay motivated and on track.
