Winter Challenges and the Power of SEL with Susan Boyer

Our very own Executive Director, Susan Boyer was recently featured in multiple outlets for her insightful article, “Social Emotional Learning in Online Schools: A Beacon for Washington Students Facing Seasonal Depression.” 

Faith Martin’s editorial on 610Kona highlights Ms. Boyer’s article, discussing the challenges that winter brings on teenagers, specifically seasonal depression and how SEL programs offer an effective way to counter these challenges. 

A Passion for Education and Leadership 

Ms. Boyer has over twenty-five years of experience in education and administration, with eight of those years dedicated to Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA). Throughout her career, she has worked with students across all grade levels from K-12, and has held multiple roles at WAVA, eventually filling her current position as Executive Director. 

Prioritizing Student Success Every Step of the Way 

Ms. Boyer is dedicated to making sure that every student can succeed in WAVA. Her commitment to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment is something all administrators should thrive to do. From introducing new SEL initiatives to fostering connections between families and educators, she is constantly looking for ways to make it easier for students to succeed.
