At Washington Virtual Academies, fostering a growth mindset among students is a top priority. One of the standout programs embodying this philosophy is a unique initiative where middle school students, who may be struggling with literacy, have the opportunity to build upon their reading skills and comprehension by reading to some of our younger elementary students.

This program, launched by Washington Virtual Academies, K-2 LAP Reading Specialist Kristi Sloan, M. Ed., is helping students improve their reading skills, build confidence, and develop leadership qualities—all while creating positive, lasting connections. Did we mention this is all done virtually?

Building Confidence Through Literacy and Mentorship

The program began as a way to support middle school students who were reading below grade level. Instead of focusing solely on intervention, this initiative gives these students an empowering opportunity: reading to upper elementary students. By practicing their reading skills in a supportive and engaging environment, middle schoolers gain confidence without even realizing they’re sharpening their literacy skills.

“One of my students for the peer tutor reading program, she was below grade level when she started, her mom recently sent me her middle school i-Ready scores, she’s at or above grade level in every area of reading. Comprehension, phonics, every part of reading, she is at or above grade level,” said Washington Virtual Academies’ Reading Specialist, Kristi Sloan who is working on launching the program school-wide.

For the younger students, having a mentor and role model helps foster excitement about reading. The interactions create a positive dynamic where both age groups benefit. Elementary students learn from an encouraging friend, while middle schoolers find joy and pride in their progress. This dual benefit highlights the power of mentorship and positive reinforcement. Since its launch, all participating students have shown improvement in their reading skills. This program not only improves literacy skills but also nurtures a sense of community and purpose among online learners.

The Role of Resources and Socialization Opportunities

At Washington Virtual Academies, online education goes beyond academics to create meaningful social interactions. Through virtual clubs, group projects, and programs like this reading initiative, students build connections that enhance their educational experience.
